Grant William Thye
Synonymous with life, my work is an eclectic mix, consisting of oil paintings, wood-block prints, etchings, and drawings. If I want to make a sculpture out of wood, clay, or paper, I want to be able to do that. Having the flexibility and freedom to completely immerse myself in whatever medium comes to mind, that is when I am happiest, the most free. I continually find myself fascinated by the internal calmness, clarity, and visual excitement of my artwork. The power, fascination, and inspiration I internalize from visual images of memories or reflections on thoughts and feelings, brings my work to life.

I strip down my pieces to what I believe are the most basic ingredients; line, shape, and color. I start by quickly filling the surface with free-flowing movements. From there I pick out particular spaces and fill them with the expressive colors necessary to create an orderly composition.

I continually explore ways to maintain the juxtaposition, the push and pull of space and depth without the use of shading or perspective. However, when added back in, an extra dimension is birthed. In the coming together, love and tension are created, symbolic of both real life and fantasy.
